Velveteen Rumba

Coinciding with my purchase of a colourful bunch of Zinnia flowers was a  demonstration session from a local artist on still life painting in our weekly meeting. I was inspired with the idea of blocking out all background distractions and just loosing myself in the colour and velvet texture of the Zinnia petals. The variations of red in the petals reminded me of how light would fall on opulent red velvet fabric. Rumba is a nod to the flowers South American origins and how the rich red tones seem to dance in my palette.

Velveteen Rumba is currently on display at Worcester City Art Gallery until 18th January 2026 as part of the Worcester Society of Artists 77th Annual Art Exhibition.
