Session 9 - Carnivorous Plants | Malvern Pastel Artists

What a session this was! For Session 9 on Friday 5th June, the Malvern Pastel Artists tackled something a little out of the ordinary — Carnivorous Plants.

Whenever we can, we love to paint from life. There's something about working directly from the subject that lets you capture an unfiltered essence that photographs simply can't replicate — the subtle colours, the textures, the way light falls across a surface. We were incredibly lucky that one of our regular members is an avid collector of carnivorous plants and brought along a glorious selection for us all to work from. The room was fascinated — and we all learned a great deal along the way!

One of the joys of pastel painting is the colour selection process. Holding individual pastels up against the subject to consider your palette before you begin is such a satisfying part of the process — and with carnivorous plants, those unexpected greens, reds, and translucent tones made for some really interesting choices.

The Malvern Pastel Artists sessions are relaxed, sociable, and mutually supportive — this isn't a taught workshop, but a friendly space where artists of all abilities encourage and inspire each other. Whether you're picking up pastels for the first time or you've been painting for years, you'll find a warm welcome.

Beginners' materials are available and included in the session price, so there's no need to invest in equipment before you come along. Each session runs for 2.5 hours — a social and creative morning in good company with fellow art lovers in Malvern.
